With my friend Andrea, we often exchange, as enthusiasts, screenshots related to software updates and UI changes on our smartphones.
A few days ago, he sent me a screenshot of Samsung's new One UI 6, and I realized that every time I see the One UI, I'm never positively impressed.
I decided to study and improve that screenshot, and that's how this little UI design exercise came about.
Here's a brief summary of the changes:
--------
🔻 The most evident problem was the lack of consistent spacing and sizes between elements.
💡 First, I increased the size of the quick settings toggles a bit and managed the spacing between elements using the 8-point grid.
Notifications and the quick settings panel are now clearly separated by a line and belong to two distinct groups of elements.
I also aligned some UI elements, such as the settings icon, the icon on the far-right toggle, and the brightness settings icon.
The "like" and "reply" buttons within the notification are now better spaced, especially compared to the notification content.
--------
🔻 Consistency issues.
💡 One problem I encountered was with the icons, which I believe lack consistency among them. I tried using the Iconoir set, but I'm still not entirely convinced.
To increase consistency among the elements, I added a background to the "Notification settings" and "Clear" buttons.
Now, the notification icons adopt the primary color of the phone's theme.
Even the brightness bar underwent a minor graphical refresh.
